Weight loss expert Dr Michael Mosley has shared his top three tips for losing belly fat quickly. Whether you're looking to tone up or improve your long-term health, shedding tummy fat can make you feel much better.

Dr Mosley's first tip is to eat less sugar. He said: "To make a serious impact on your belly fat, cutting out sugar spikes is key. A surprising number of 'diet' snacks and drinks are high in sugar and are marketed as diet foods because they happen to be low in fat."

He suggests limiting intake of any food or drink containing more than five per cent sugar to no more than twice a week. This includes smoothies, juices, and sweet fruits like pineapples and mangoes.

Finally, he advises swapping processed foods like white bread, pasta and chips for healthier options like quinoa or brown rice.

The Mirror reports that Dr Mosley said: "Two things will surprise you: the amount of sugar you were consuming unawares and the speed at which your belly fat will begin to tame itself when you cut it out."

The Fast800 website suggests that compared to a low-fat diet, "lower-carb diets can lead to two to three times more weight loss".

Intermittent fasting is a method where you eat regularly for a while and then stop eating for a period. Dr Mosley explains that a fasting day should not involve eating more than 800 calories.

He claims: "Not only do you simply lose weight by eating fewer calories, but your body responds to the stress of fasting by enhancing hormone function to facilitate weight loss and burn fat for energy. Short-term fasting can lead to several changes in the body that make fat burning easier."

Dr Mosley emphasises that exercise is crucial for many reasons, saying: "It is amongst the best things you can do for a long and healthy life." However, he notes that exercise alone won't be enough to get rid of stubborn fat but it certainly helps keep it off.
