Summer is now well underway, with many people planning, or having already been on, a trip abroad. It's a hugely busy year for the travel industry, and while holidays are usually significantly more expensive while the kids are off school, there are still plenty of people leaving the UK behind in favour of a change of scenery and some sunshine.
A UK survey by HSBC has revealed travel habits and preferences this summer, with some 29% of Scousers opting for one European country in particular. While previously places such as Amsterdam and Barcelona have topped lists for those travelling from Liverpool, HSBC found Italy is now the most popular holiday summer destination for Scousers, with 29% jetting off there this summer.
The research also found people from Liverpool typically book a break three to four months in advance, with physical cards the most preferred payment method for Scousers while they are abroad. Looking at the UK as a whole, Spain took the top spot with some 28% travelling there, with Greece in second place, and Italy third, with 17% and 16% respectively.
HSBC also said typical holidaymakers now spend an additional £250 on "extras" during a week-long getaway compared to their regular at-home expenses. This extra spending often goes towards dining out, attending live events, shopping for clothes, and transportation.
HSBC UK’s head of everyday banking, Pella Frost, said: “We all like to splash out on holiday but splurge regret can cast a shadow over the whole experience. Over a third of holidaymakers get caught out by unexpected fees making a holiday splurge that little bit more costly.
“With no HSBC fees on card spend or ATM withdrawals abroad, Global Money helps customers avoid unexpected costs and makes it easy to plan and stick to a holiday budget. Customers can manage their spending easily through the app so they can forget about fees and focus on fun with their families or friends.”
