Welcome to our series showcasing some of our Marie Claire editors' fashion and beauty purchases this month. You'll discover the seasonal basics anchoring our wardrobes and the beauty buys that have us reconsidering our routines.
As brittle leaves pile up on the ground and faint notes of cinnamon fill the air, we’re loading our shopping carts with a host of fall essentials to carry us through the next few months. Senior news editor Halie LeSavage has embraced the English country style trend with a sturdy barn jacket, and fashion editor Lauren Tappan just snagged the coziest wool-blend sweater. Meanwhile, on the beauty front, senior culture editor Sadie Bell discovered a new shade of lipstick that she plans to wear all season long.

"I swear I didn't order this just because everyone these days is dressing like the proprietor of stables in the English countryside. Barn jackets were definitely one of my 'things' before they became a Prada-approved trend, and after many years of loving wear-and-tear, a khaki green version I'd ordered from J.Crew Factory in college finally wore out this year. I thought the time was right for an upgrade with this longer, checked version. I like that it injects some pattern into my day-to-day wardrobe, while still feeling neutral enough to wear with all sorts of outfits. And trust that I will be wearing this when everyone else's horse girl phase ends."—Halie LeSavage, senior news editor (fashion & beauty)
"Now that fall has officially arrived, I’ll be living in boots 24/7. The newest addition to my boot collection? Sam Edelman’s Margo booties—a pair of black kitten-heeled boots that I plan to shamelessly wear on repeat. These elevated shoes have a sleek silhouette and a slim squared-off toe that will pair well with a range of fall outfits. Although I chose the practical black colorway, the label also offers a few other trendy alternatives that I’m tempted to go back for.”—Brooke Knappenberger, associate commerce editor
"I am a Glossier devotee. During my latest haul—when I stocked up on all my go-to products including the brand’s Pro-Tip Eyeliner—I decided to try a new hue of Glossier’s Ultralip lipstick. While I often opt for a dark color, I chose a watermelon red shade called, 'Fête.' It's more natural and far less stark than some red lipsticks can be. Also, it makes for a warm hue to wear into fall. This lipstick goes on easily, and it has a nice sheen to it, which I enhance by wearing it with Glossier's Balm Dot Com in 'Fig.' As temperatures get cooler, I'm looking forward to this shade pairing nicely with my inevitably rosy cheeks."—Sadie Bell, senior culture editor
"I was looking at my, admittedly robust, sweater collection the other day and realized that while I have all manner of wildly-printed crewnecks and cardigans on lock, I didn’t have many of those wear-with-anything staple pieces. Enter: this perfect cropped cashmere sweater in a classic heathered gray. It has a slim fit to contrast with my preferred baggy, wide-leg trousers or jeans and truly looks so much more expensive than it is. Plus, I’m super sensitive to any itchy knitwear, and the texture is so deliciously soft that I could happily wear this from day to night."—Hannah Baxter, beauty director
"Barrel jeans might just be my new go-to pants for fall. Initially, I was worried about how this billowing silhouette would fit me (especially because I always struggle with jeans that have long inseams). That said, Abercrombie offers a wide range of lengths, so I had a feeling that I’d be able to find the perfect pair within the brand’s collection. And I did! To my surprise, I didn’t even have to opt for a shorter inseam length. However, I did choose to size up in the waist so that I could have a bit more room in the midsection area.”—Jonelle Afurong, junior visual designer
"The other day, I asked Marie Claire's beauty editor, Samantha Holender, what the deal was with tubing mascara and why I was seeing ads for it splashed across my Instagram feed. 'It's the new thing,' explained my dear coworker, who I use as a human Google for any and all makeup-related queries. 'It uses lengthening fibers to extend, fan out, and lift the lash.' Sold at 'lengthening fibers,' I picked up Hourglass's Instant Extensions mascara at Sephora and instantly understood the hype after applying only three coats of the product. My lashes almost doubled in size and curled up dramatically, nearly reaching the top of my eyelid. I'm officially hooked now."—Emma Childs, fashion features editor
"I was struggling to find the perfect outfit for a trip to cover Prince Harry's Climate Week events in NYC, but once again, Bloomie's came to the rescue. This Karl Lagerfeld Paris dress feels very Chanel-slash-fancy-librarian. It's conservative enough for a serious business conference but fun enough for dinner with friends. What instantly jumped out at me was the pearl-and-crystal trimmed collar— it's definitely giving Princess Kate."—Kristin Contino, senior royal and celebrity editor
"It's sweater weather season, which means my wardrobe is filled to the brim with loads of cozy pullovers. I've just updated my collection with Aritzia's Glory sweater, a chunky cable knit crewneck drenched in a delectable shade of chocolate brown. Aside from its color, I also love how comfortable this piece is. It's woven with an insulated blend of merino wool yarn, which has kept me nice and warm during brisk temperature dips. Plus, it’s such a versatile top, so the styling options are endless. I’ve been pairing this snug sweater with roomy wide-leg jeans, sharp tailored trousers, and slinky slip skirts."—Lauren Tappan, fashion editor
"This powder may as well be made from fairy dust because it's pure magic (okay, it's actually made of skincare superstars like hyaluronic acid and Niacinamide, but you get the point). Sweep the product over your skin and watch as pores minimize before your eyes. I didn't believe it until I tried it for myself after stumbling across a YSL pop-up, and I immediately needed it afterward. Since it's translucent, you can easily reapply this product throughout your day. Plus, the compact is so beautiful that you won't mind it peeking out of your bag."—Neha Prakash, entertainment director
"When the weather really starts to cool down, and the dread of winter starts to bubble up, I find solace in the form of 100 percent cashmere socks. While cashmere blends are more durable and wearable outside of the house, pure cashmere is in a league of its own—even if (or especially because?) I can only wear these socks at home. Whenever I slip into a fresh pair of sleep socks, I become the main character of my own cozy night in. My tea kettle is whistling, my face mask is perfectly applied, my PJs are matching, and my candles are lit. They're an essential in head-to-toe relaxation."—Lucia Tonelli, associate director of social media
