THE MOST FLATTERING GREY HAIRSTYLES FOR THOSE DITCHING THE DYE, ACCORDING TO EXPERTS

With celebrities like Andie MacDowell to Sarah Jessica Parker embracing their silver hair, the stigma around going grey is slowing becoming a thing of the past with women now growing out their greys as a statement of confidence and a mark of a life well lived.

Feeling inspired? There's no bad or good time to stop colouring your hair, it's ultimately a personal preference.

For those ready to make the switch. we spoke to Jonathan Andrew, Fudge Professional Global Brand Ambassador, Kayleigh Clark, founder of Kayleigh Jane Extensions and Jade Summers, director of Hair & Bone salon in London.

Here are their best tips...

What do you need to consider when going grey?

As grey hair can be drier and brittle, experts agree that the key for your silver mane to look good is to keep it in pristine condition.

Jonathan told Prima, "Your hair goes through cycles, of shedding, falling out and growing back, these hair follicles contain pigment cells that produce melanin to give your hair its natural colour. When the body slows down its melanin production hair will go white, grey, silver and ash.

"For me, icons like Helen Mirren, Judi Dench, and Meryl Streep have all sported fabulous grey styles with their hues looking in optimum condition – and that to me is a great benchmark for gorgeous grey."

How to keep grey hair looking great

Learning to properly care for your grey hair is a must to make the hue work for you, rather than against you.

For women with greying or silver hair, a simple treatment can enhance the shine and richness of the natural shade, making the hair look healthy and vibrant.

From nutrition to hydration there are a few simple things you can do to give your hair the support it needs. Here are Jade's recommendations.

  • Nutrition - "Maintain a nutrient-rich diet filled with fresh produce, essential vitamins and minerals while avoiding processed foods."
  • Professional care - "Schedule regular trims to maintain shape and remove split ends. Seek bespoke advice from your stylist to adapt to your hair’s changes."
  • Protect your hair against heat damage - "Minimise heat styling, always use a heat protector, and shield hair from UV exposure with SPF to prevent damage from free radicals."
  • Hydrate and restore - "Use products that add moisture and protection. Oribe’s Super Shine Moisturising Cream is a great option, offering moisture retention, external protection, and thermal defence for blow-drying or diffusing."
  • Embrace personal style - "Style has no age. There is no limit to what styles you can rock, however we always consider face shape and lifestyle and of course hair type and changes to the hair as we age, creating bespoke looks is key."

How to style grey hair

Styling silver hair is all about enhancing your natural look and finding a style that makes you feel confident while keeping your hair healthy and vibrant.

Kayleigh says, "For women embracing their natural grey, the key is to ensure the cut complements the hair’s natural texture and colour. Adding subtle highlights or lowlights can provide dimension and avoid a flat appearance. Ashy tones can blend seamlessly with grey, while cooler platinum hues can make a bold statement.

Jonathan adds, "There are so many ways of going grey and it’s very much about what makes you feel great, really. It’s important to note that going grey gracefully is a journey plus not everyone goes totally grey. I like to play around with adding in highlights and complimenting or contrasting tones to break it up.

"If you’re embracing your grey, then again condition and care is key. Try using a purple shampoo and conditioner once a week to knock out any unwanted yellow tones.

"One of my favourite short looks is still the Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada, with that oh-so-trendy quiff at the front. The right style can make such a statement and make you feel a million dollars."
