What does luxury mean to you?
Feeling swanky and optimistic.
Do you have a favourite watch?
For years I wore the Heuer Monaco with the blue face, the one that Steve McQueen wore in Le Mans. I still dream about that watch.
What luxury can’t you live without?
I am addicted to Frédéric Malle perfumes, either Géranium pour Monsieur or Angéliques sous la Pluie. When people say they are fragrance-phobes. I just figure they have not discovered Freddie yet.
What do you collect?
Ceramic pots by my husband, Jonathan Adler. They are postmodern and trippy, like Delft on acid. We have a stupendous archive of his work.
Who is your favourite tailor?
The late Edward Sexton forever! I dressed his windows in the 1970s so I saw his mad skills up close.
What about shirts?
Hamilton Shirts – in Houston since 1883 – does a special western yoke, which adds a little yee-ha to my look.
And for shoes?
When Hedi Slimane was at YSL I was addicted to his starry sneakers. Also, vintage finds on The RealReal. I am reliving
my glam rock youth.
Who would design your dream home?
It would be fun to commission Antoni Gaudí. His maximalist style is so wildly out of whack with prevailing tastes.
Private jet or yacht?
My idea of luxury travel is riding my Electra Townie bicycle. It is battleship grey, with a basket on the front. I’m turning into Miss Marple.
What are you drinking?
I am too old to get plastered, but I love to watch other people drink something pretty, like absinthe. Very Toulouse-Lautrec.
What’s your dream car, and why?
The Dutch football player Johan Cruyff was a style hero, and in the 1970s he drove a Citroën SM Maserati. So groovy, and room for the dog.
